The music of Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) is emotion-driven and dynamic, but her creative process is rational and well organized. She confesses, 'It happens that sometimes, in the early stages of a piece I become fascinated with mathematical equations, structures and diagrams; I find them aesthetically pleasing. Later, I begin changing everything, reshaping things, and subsequently, conceal the existence of these formulae'.
Each of her pieces has a distinct sound system, and structurally, her compositional models are never repeated. The character and dynamic development also differ substantially. Nevertheless, there is a stylistic unity in her works, an authentic signature. This signature is embedded in an enormous emotional intensity, which does not explode with unrestrained fortes and mighty tuttis. The high voltage of her music absorbs the listener into the state of an agitated, or perhaps vigilant anticipation, until being ambushed by an unexpected emotional blast. The angst and surprise attack are the trademarks of Martinaitytė and are characteristic of her artistic logic and emotional intelligence.
