Šarūnas Nakas is clearly an exceptional figure on Lithuanian music scene. His diverse activities always bear the distinction of a broad cultural purview and a somewhat radical mindset instantly providing a substantial context for interpretations of his musical works. Provoked by Nakas' controversial utterances, listeners - or critics, for that matter - feel obliged to search for his unconventional discoveries. His tendency towards either overt affection or neglect towards the music of other composers often forces one to attempt to solve the puzzle of this tendency by trying to surmise the context of his compositions within diverse musical worlds - from Olivier Messiaen and Edgard Varèse, Gérard Grisey and Bronius Kutavičius, to the adepts of terza prattica, jazz, fluxus, as well as traditional and non-commercial pop music. Cultural connotations heighten the complexity when it comes to the poetic component of his musical works and attempts to transgress the limitation of conventional concert music via happenings and interdisciplinary projects.

This CD presents several of Šarūnas Nakas’ works created in the past decade. In one’s attempt to approach them, the temptation is to choose and equally radical strategy – to resist anything said or written about the composer, to overrule judgements based on his reputation, and to try to focus solely on listening attentively. One must attempt to grasp the music free from extramusical commentaries, or – to rephrase one of the composer’s commentaries about his music presented in this selection – naked, bare, pure, unadorned. Most importantly, such a method of listening follows from Nakas' music itself, critically and consequentially. His compositions usually proliferate out of a compact musical segment that becomes further elaborated through rigid structural variation, isorhythmic augmentation or diminution, gets expanded into cluster-like stacks of chords or disseminated into separate sounds. A customary set of compositional procedures, widely practiced in contemporary art music (especially the composer’s favorite and easily predictable prototypes such as series, a motet, a palindrome and a loop), becomes transformed at the macro-dimension of his works where modes of different intensity and ambitus help deform recognisable structural patterns into asymmetrical pulsations of separate sounds and textures. The slow progress of static music thus becomes thwarted with energetic gusts of intensity. The monotony is contrasted with ecstasy. Ebbs and flows of the abstract musical material seem to depend on an apparently irrational logic that disguises structural manipulation.
