THE ETERNAL SPECTACLE OF LIFE, WITH GRASSHOPPERS CHIRPING AND NIGHTINGALES SINGING
Bronius Kutavičius is one of Lithuania's most distinctive conceptualist composers, someone who consistently sought to surprise his listeners. Each of his new compositions was unexpected, and audiences gathered at concerts of his works were often met with provocation; for example — on one occasion, the audience was suggested to sit and listen attentively to the chirping of grasshoppers... Though, this was not meant to disconcert people; actually quite the opposite — the composer wanted to cheer up the gathered listeners with these seemingly unassuming sounds.
Kutavičius drew ideas for his work from both nature and culture. In the latter realm, he sought inspiration from the works of art and momentous events of past epochs, as well as from the musical styles of the centuries long past like a museum curator, he would uncover some remarkable, mysterious cultural treasure and reinterpret it anew, imparting new life. Kutavičius amplified the audience's previous awareness of cultural meanings and revived blank images of the past with bright musical associations.
This CD presents the recordings of chamber works composed by Bronius Kutavičius from 1975 to 1980. These works premiered in full concert halls and were admired by many musicians, actors, artists, and writers. One cannot imagine cultural life in Vilnius in the 1980s without these compositions. These memorable works were also performed later and also elicited interest and recognition abroad.
