about

Andrius Arutiunian (b. 1991) mostly works in the fields of electroacoustic and instrumental music by creating sound installations and objects, experimenting with hybrid forms of sound. It was quite natural for him, then, to “improve” the live sound of the choir in his We, the Chorus by employing auto-tune software. In the course of the piece, he relentlessly filters the choral voices and re-tunes them in accordance with a pre-set modal arrangement. His composition merges the transformed choral singing with a slowed-down recording of the song by the street musician Rajah Rajasingham, and dark electronic harmonies attributable to techno music. The result is a sonic atmosphere that is futuristic, frosty and unwelcoming. Valentinas Klimašauskas, whose book’s (Oh, My Darling & Other Rants, 2018) chapter title Arutiunian used to name his composition, wrote: “In today’s society, the Chorus represents and refers to the whole mixed landscape of a/anti/post/sub/super-humans – AI, eco sentient, clones, consumers, migrants, narcissistic capitalists, Nazis, populist politicians, precariat, taxpayers, etc.”
