BRONIUS KUTAVIČIUS

FROM THE YOTVINGIAN STONE (1983)
Yotvingian and Lithuanian folk texts
Oratorio for vocal ensemble, non-traditional and folk instruments

From the Yotvingian Stone resembles a memorial to an extinct Baltic tribe. The oratorio is based on Yotvingian sentences written by Hieronim Malecki (Meletius) in the 16th century, along with a folk song written down by the composer himself, The Wind-Blown Oak. The oratorio begins with a rhythm beaten by stones, which, according to the composer, immediately “grabs you by the throat, not letting go”.

At the beginning of the piece, chants in an indiscernible language can be heard, accompanied by tribal instruments of indeterminate pitch which produce a steady rhythm (in addition to stones, straw reed pipe, overtone flute, jaw harp, bottles, clay drums, one string bow with inflated animal bladder are also used). All of this fits the very essence of the aims of the composer’s work – to harbour the mystery and spirit of the past (the past itself being the greatest mystery of all). According to the composer, spoken language and a rhythm of beating stones must have been the form that the most archaic kinds of music took.
