One night, the pianist Daumantas Kirilauskas had a dream of himself playing on stage with a big band. This nocturnal vision served as a starting point for his friend, the composer Jonas Jurkūnas, who delved into some of Daumantas’s favourite jazz tunes in 2021 to write Golden Chains, a concerto for piano and big band. By using a mathematical interpretation of Markov’s chains, the composer plays with different forms of the same musical material. For him, this represents a certain jazzy attitude towards algorithmic music-making which also involves free improvisation, lyrical episodes, polyrhythms, and rhythmic formulas pertinent to hip hop and rap. The fiery piece exudes a powerful energy and represents a mixture of ideas and techniques that locate it somewhere between jazz and classical music.
