about

Mantvydas Leonas Pranulis (b. 1996), best known as a jazz musician, has led a number of projects of jazz and alternative music. His band Brave Noises won, in 2015, the Vilnius Jazz Young Power Competition, with Pranulis taking the best instrumentalist prize. A couple of years on, he, together with the band Allergy+, took the top award at the Jazz Talents Festival in Klaipėda. In 2021, with his trio Luvhurts, he won the Vilnius Jazz Young Power competition again, and was awarded for best original composition as well. He has been involved in theatre and cinema through various collaborations and as a composer. Alongside jazz, minimalism is another passion for Pranulis, this time reflected in Not Allowed, a piece that divides the choir into three groups, each of which sings the same motif – modified in progress – in different tempos. In the second half of the composition, Pranulis employs drone-style electronics as background for a “battle” between the three groups of the choir. The piece addresses social relationships as well as anxiety and fear of rejection. According to Viltė Žakevičiūtė, who reviewed the premiere performances of the Vilnius LAB, “in this piece the choir echoes the often-dissenting voices of people’s inner worlds”.
