about

'Mountains in the Mist' for symphony orchestra (2005)

This work was created during the Nordic composers' workshop in Stavanger, Norway. The composer conceived an idea for this composition while writing her first symphonic opus, 'Iceberg Symphony', as part of the projected symphonic trilogy. Unifying the series of three works is the image of a mountain and a conjunction of distinct elements of nature, as found in many ancient cultures. Representing a symbolic junction of 'earth' and 'air', 'Mountains in the Mist' was written as the slow movement of this trilogy, whose harmonic structure is based on the composer's favourite interval of minor third and the principle of symmetry. The latter is applied here as thoroughly as in no other composition by Serkšnytė: all harmonies have one sound as their axis (G sharp), from which they spread at equal intervals in both directions. The work abounds with coloristic effects and contrasts between 'light' and 'dark’, cold' and 'warm' sonorities. The human voice is imitated in places of greater intensity (by means of muted brass instruments, for example), while various multiphonics used in the grand climax create the impressions of a clamorous crowd.
