about

'Oriental Elegy' for string quartet (2002, 2nd version 2003)

It was composed at the request of the Canadian New Music Concerts. According to the composer, the inspiration for her piece came from Alexander Sokurov's film by the same name — she was overwhelmed by the film's nostalgic beauty and piercing sadness. Unlike in her earlier pieces, harmonic formations lose their former significance and give way to the sound itself — to the way it is produced and the mental state it evokes. The composition also demonstrates quite a few episodes of aleatory writing and a variety of extended string techniques and unconventional sound effects, which are nevertheless used to evoke vivid images of nature — the murmur of the wind, rustle of leaves and rippling of water were the primary impulses for the sound material of this score. The sensation of trembling silence, evoked by high pitched whispery harmonics, reverberant pizzicati and 'eloquent' rests, is reminiscent of Oriental aesthetics, while these 'suppressed' gestures augment the growing suspense, until it eventually explodes into an unrestrained lament in the final movement.
