about

'Perpetuum mobile - 1979' for cello and piano (1979) is a particularly intense and energetic piece; although the sound flow in the perpetual motion does not convey joy. The performance by David Geringas and Tatjana Schatz carries an undertone of restlessness and foreboding. Is not this repetitive music a metaphor for both creative and destructive elements of falsified and unjust history? Later, as we know, the 'wheel of history’ the image of circular motion of the 'totalitarian machine' appears in other repetitive works by Lithuanian composers.

The national histories of Eastern Europe contain painful memories, historical episodes appear unjust. The region was devastated by frequent wars, nations were decimated, cultural treasures were plundered and destroyed. During periods of provisional peace, people tried to reconstruct the ruins of their cultural heritage, and preserve what was left for posterity. Bronius Kutavičius's 'creation of cultural meanings' can be understood as the preservation and enrichment of cultural heritage. There has been no other composer who has read and interpreted as many pages of Lithuanian cultural history or has written as many musical dedications. According the musicologist Gražina Daunoravičienė, 'The composer's consciousness associated the Lithuanian idea not only with historical facts, but also with Lithuanian cultural symbols and signs, renowned historical figures and hypothetical musical sounds'. Kutavičius's music, replete with various references, can he interpreted intertextually.
