about

Piano Sonata (1975) is a composition in three movements, wherein not only the volume but also the intensity of the music evolves in an almost geometric progression: pianissimo, mezzo forte, fortissimo. The score leaves ample space for the perception and temperament of the performer, and in this recording we hear how the pianist Birutė Vainiūnaitė, one of the first to perform this piece, has interpreted the composition.

Conceptual piano sonata — is somewhat of an affront, urging the listener to perceive that the music sounds very differently, performed loudly or softly, developed very slowly or very fast. If we are sensitive to sounds, we are always participating in a magical performance. We hear music one way listening at home and another way when we hear the sounds wafting from an open window in the street. We are animated and moved, we feel the vibrations of sound in our bodies when we listen to music in close proximity; we are relaxed and pensive when we hear music in the distance. And what marvelous music we hear in our memories or our dreams...
