about

Koans have a long history in Zen Buddhism and its traditional lore. They came to be understood as contradictory questions, stories or statements that provoke the “great doubt” and encourage continuous contemplation amongst the Zen students until they become independent from reason and achieve higher level of consciousness. A good example of a Koan is the sound of one hand clapping: two hands clap and there is a sound, so what would be the sound of the one hand?

The idea behind the piece and its structure were influenced by the Oriental philosophy. It was an attempt to compose a ‘musical köan’. The musical material aims at mimicking the state of mind fostered by the Zen: concentration at its uttermost and complete submersion in meditation in which all duality disappears and all becomes one, pure and absolute. In order to achieve such an impression, a single musical motif was employed and presented using diverse performing techniques and articulations, yet retaining its ‘primordial’ nature.
