'Chronon' for clarinet, trumpet, cello, double bass, piano and percussion (1992-1997)
'The idea of a river, flow, source, sea and deluge 'inundates' quite a few of my works. Water becomes time; time becomes fire; fire becomes history; history becomes a spectacle; a spectacle transforms itself into a story; and a story turns back into water...'
'Chronon' (Xρόνον) is a Greek word for time, and also a term designating a hypothetical quantum of time equal to about 2x10-23 seconds, which was proposed as part of recent theory in physics, contradicting the traditional concept of time as a continuous quantity. In medieval chronicles, however, 'Chronon' waste name of the river Nemunas, on which I grew up as a child. This fact may explain why this traditional idea of a river appeared more exciting for me than the speculations in theoretical physics. My work thus symbolises three shapes of the river: sources, midcourse and outlet.
Part I 'Sources. Birds' is a counterpoint of endlessly falling polytemporal sequences, which resemble, in some respects, the intricacies of early Renaissance polyphony. Part II 'River. Shoals' brings rapid rhythmic torrent of sound, a pliant, gradually ascending organum, breaking into garlands of chromatic scales and pushing the performers close to the limit of their virtuoso abilities. Part Ill 'Sea. Sky' is a static and slightly changing movement, in which music is derived from one hard undulating tone, whose cumulated energy empties into an expanse of indiscernible horizons.
