'Crown. In memoriam Vladas Zalatoris' for wind orchestra (2005)
'A crowned head naturally becomes part of mythology; time limits become obliterated; the feeling of bound-less power awakens; and the world order is irrevocably changed and disturbed. The crown rules even if it is being detested, ignored or mocked'.
Originating from the shape of a helmet, the crown has experienced many transformations, always remaining noble and riveting the observer's attention. Adorned with gems, precious metals and furs, it used to decorate the heads of kings, pharaohs, emperors, popes and princes; others rested on the heads of Christ and holy martyrs.
My musical crown is that of large dimensions, like static and monumental icons of loud sound. It involves no conflicts, detailed dynamics, or narratives. The wind orchestra plays tutti virtually the entire duration of the piece. But more importantly, it aims at the illusion of infinity and eternity.
35 patterns of Indian Carnatic rhythms are repeated in five contrasting movements like endless mantras and laid out like colourful mandalas. Their ornaments are something tinged with neurons of chromatic scales, while contemplative hymnodies give way to massive ‘soundscrapers’.
I dedicate this piece in the memory of my wonderful friend, Vladas Zalatoris (1961-2005)
