about
'Nude' for large orchestra (2004)
'Nude: without clothes, undressed or barely dressed, covered with nothing, without accessories, unadorned, pure, possessing nothing, poor. Without a course and direction. Without anything. Completely nude'.
A symphony orchestra is often pictured as a community of people, employing musical means to put various stories on stage. But this is all but one possible way to handle 100 musicians. Divided into seven sections, this composition is more of an observation of rhythms and timbres in action rather than the direction of any musical dramas.
The key participant here is the group of five percussionists, which displays consistently the who catalogue of 120 deci-tala — rhythmic patterns canonised by the.13th century North Indian theorist Sharngadeva. Binding these deci-tala patterns are four homophonic hymns played by the orchestra. The seven sections of the 'Nude' are like seven chakras, each activated-by slow breathing, especially the fifth chakra of the 'throat' - the rumbling tutti of the orchestra.
